BACKGROUND:
Criminal justice explores the theories and methods of handling those who have committed crimes. It studies the three major components of the justice system: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. In doing so, it also considers society’s attitudes on the treatment of criminals.
Penology is a specific subfield that analyzes prisons and the punishment and prevention of crime. It focuses on the corrections aspect of justice, and has a large intersection with architecture.
PROJECT THESIS:
For the final assessment of this course, I wrote an essay, The Penitentiary Impediment, that gives a broad overview of prison architecture. I first explore the history and philosophies that shaped carceral design. Then, I scrutinize the failings of modern prison infrastructure. Accordingly, I explain the correct implementation of architectural theory to construct prisons that are not only more humane but also more effective at rehabilitation of offenders.
*Prisons are the building type that I am most passionate about. Hence, I put the entirety of my research and intuition behind this paper.
