~TECHNICAL WRITING~

-2025-

BACKGROUND:

This course teaches writing as it pertains to technical papers, such as reports, construction documents, manuals, and employment materials. It prepares students for writing in professional contexts, as contrasted with academic or creative contexts, and observing how rhetoric is applied distinctly to each.

The two main assignments are the Writing Project, and the Design Project. The former involves writing a report about a technical subject. The latter involves combining text with design to produce a piece of technical documentation in a different medium than pure writing.

For my writing project, I created a technical report about my career choice—architecture. Specifically, I wrote about the correct education of an architect. I start by showing that a generalist education is more conducive to architecture than a specialist one. Then, I layout how to achieve a generalist education, with detailed examples of various subjects. Throughout the paper, I use my own diverse knowledge, and research from books like Vitruvius' De architectura.

For my design project, I wrote a 5.5" x 8.5" manual for reading construction documents. It has dense but concise textual descriptions along with detailed samples of architectural drawings and diagrams. The manual is organized by drawing type—cover sheet, site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, and annotations for easy accessibility. I employ a clean, modern aesthetic appropriate to the utility of an instructional manual. This project entailed applying writing and design to produce a work that is both beautiful and useful.
