BACKGROUND:
In 2024, I had the opportunity to give a presentation about library architecture at the annual Utah Library Association (ULA) conference. This was a fifty minute presentation with about one hundred attendees. It was a resounding success with the audience; I received emails afterwards from librarians out-of-state asking for further insights.
SYNOPSIS:
The presentation covered the intersection of architectural theory, practical and aesthetic elements, and library science. I explained how librarians could implement basic aspects of architecture into their day to day work, as well as their overall practice. Photos and sample floor plans—both of which were produced by me—are used to teach effective and ineffective applications. I concluded by talking about the future of library architecture and provided several examples of innovative contemporary libraries.
